What is My IP Address? Understanding IP Lookup

What is an IP Address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique identifier assigned to your device when it connects to the internet. Think of it as your digital home address that allows websites and services to send data back to you.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4: The traditional format (e.g., 192.168.1.1) with about 4.3 billion addresses. Most commonly used today.

IPv6: The newer format (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334) with virtually unlimited addresses. Being adopted gradually.

What Can Your IP Address Reveal?

  • Your approximate geographic location (city, region, country)
  • Your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • Your network organization
  • Your timezone

Why Use an IP Lookup Tool?

  • Verify your VPN or proxy is working
  • Troubleshoot network connectivity issues
  • Check if your ISP is routing traffic correctly
  • Identify your location for geo-restricted content

Privacy Considerations

Your IP address can be used to track your general location. To protect your privacy:

  • Use a VPN to mask your real IP
  • Be aware that websites can see your IP
  • Understand that IP-based location is approximate, not exact

Public and private IP addresses

You have two kinds of addresses. Your public IP is the address websites see, and it belongs to your internet provider's network. Your devices also have private IPs (like 192.168.1.20) used only inside your home network. Many devices share one public IP through your router, which is why the address shown by an IP lookup tool is the same for your phone and laptop at home.

Dynamic and static addresses

Most home connections use a dynamic IP, which can change when your router restarts or after some time. A static IP never changes and is used for servers, remote access and some business services, usually for an extra fee.

How accurate is IP location?

IP geolocation is an estimate built from provider records and other data. Country is usually correct, region often is, and the city can be wrong by dozens of miles. On mobile networks, in company offices and on VPNs, the location may be a regional hub far away. An IP address does not identify a person or a street address.

Protecting your privacy

Your IP is visible to every site you visit. You can reduce what it reveals by using a reputable VPN, which replaces your IP with the VPN server's address, or by using a browser feature that hides your IP from trackers. Keep in mind that a VPN moves trust to the VPN company, so choose one with a clear no-logging policy.

Security uses

If you run a home server or allow remote access, you may need to know your public IP and to restrict access to specific addresses. Unfamiliar IP addresses in your account's login history are a warning sign worth checking.
